After about half an hour, we left the dance floor, and Kevin and I headed toward the bar. At the club, I bought a round of beers for my friends, had a few sips myself, and then started dancing with my best friend, Kevin*. I know how to pace myself, and I'm also very tall and pretty athletic, so I don't get wasted easily. Finally, at about 11:30, we decided to end the night at a club downtown. I drank a couple of martinis over the span of three hours, while we lingered over a great multicourse meal and just relaxed and talked. Back home seemed like a good place to do that.Ī few days before I was to move, a group of five friends took me out for a fancy dinner at the Midtown restaurant where I'd previously worked as a server. I wanted to get my life together, maybe even start my own business. I'd come to New York initially to be a model, but then I attended the Fashion Institute of Technology for a while, worked at a design store, and trained and worked in the restaurant industry. I had hit a turning point: I was 27 and still kind of searching for the right career, and it felt like it was time to pursue my true passions: art and design. I was on the verge of a big life change, getting ready to leave New York (where I'd lived for four years) to go home to California, where I'd grown up. The night I was raped had started out with a going-away celebration.
